A medieval castle built in the heart of Verona and for centuries the symbol of military power was converted from a barracks to a museum of ancient art through romantic stylistic restoration in the 1920s.
Rebuilding commenced almost immediately after the devastation of World War II, which saw the destruction of the castle bridge and the Boggian wing, where Galeazzo Ciano was tried and sentenced to death in 1944.
The master of contemporary architecture Carlo Scarpa and the director Licisco Magagnato worked from 1958 to 1964 on a project of crystalline restoration and refurbishment to create an exemplary museum in a setting that is today a landmark of both Italian and international museum design.
The city’s priceless collections of medieval sculpture, exemplified by the equestrian statues of Cangrande I and Mastino II of the della Scala dynasty, and paintings ranging from the 14th to the 18th century by masters such as Pisanello, Stefano di Giovanni, Giovanni Bellini, Andrea Mantegna, Paolo Veronese, Jacopo Tintoretto, Alessandro Turchi and Giovanni Battista and Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo are superbly displayed to provide a fascinating journey through art, architecture and history.
