The Raccolte Frugone, housed in Villa Grimaldi Fassio (residence of the Fassio family of ship owners, which was restored by architect Luigi Carlo Daneri between 1958 and 1960), host 284 masterpieces by the most renowned Italian and international 19th-century and Belle Époque artists. The paintings were purchased by G.B. Lazzaro and Luigi Frugone, two brothers working as entrepreneurs, and donated to the city of Genoa between 1935 and 1953.

The collections include marvelous portraits and wonderful landscapes painted by the Macchiaioli artists Giovanni Fattori, Telemaco Signorini and Silvestro Lega; by Piedmont painters Antonio Fontanesi and Lorenzo Delleani; by the Lombard Scapigliati artists Tranquillo Cremona and Luigi Conconi; by the Veneto artists Giacomo Favretto, Pietro Fragiacomo and Guglielmo Ciardi. In addition to precious artworks by Giovanni Segantini, Paolo Troubetzkoy, by the italiens de Paris, namely Giuseppe De Nittis and Giovanni Boldini, and foreign artists Richard Miller, Lucien Simon and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida.
